    About Project

TRC America Demolition Services dismantled the entire electrical power system at the Kaiser Aluminum facility. This required removing 100+ transformers ranging in voltages and capacity, overhead high voltage power lines and support structures, switchgear, and specialized equipment used in the aluminum smelting process.

We worked closely with the Port representatives to develop and implement acceptable plans for the deconstruction of various assets.

The initial phase required that all transformers and components be tested to determine PCB contaminated oil concentration. More than 100,000 gallons of 0-50 ppm were pumped into railcars for recycling upon receiving the testing results. The transformers testing higher than 50 ppm were pumped, and the oil was sent to a hazardous waste facility for disposal. These transformers were then retro-filled and reenergized for 90 days. The units were retested, and all showed less than 50 ppm. They were then disassembled and recycled.

We recycled more than 2 million pounds of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Our extensive contacts both here and abroad have enabled us to receive above-market prices, maximizing our investment return and our goal of 90%+ recycling/reuse of all materials.

During this project’s scope, we have worked diligently to secure and plan with environmental contractors for the remediation and abatement of hazardous material including asbestos, PCB oil, and PCB oil-filled capacitors to meet the Port’s standards.

The final phase of the project involved the cleanup of the site to meet the requirements set forth by the Port’s representatives.
